Shadowverse (2020)

In the Shadowverse anime, Light Tenryu arrives at Shadowverse College without any knowledge of the collectible card game. He joins the Seventh Flame club, which is on the verge of being shut down. Light quickly falls in love with Shadowverse while working with his friends Subaru Makabe and Itsuki Mitsutagawa to find new club members.

Plot

Season 1

Hiro Ryūgasaki is just an ordinary middle school student at Tensei Academy until a strange event changes his life. He stumbles upon a mysterious smartphone with the popular digital card game, Shadowverse, installed. Through this game, Hiro meets rivals, makes new friends, participates in intense tournaments, and forms strong bonds with others. As the story unfolds, Hiro and his friends uncover that Shadowverse is not just a game but a crucial tool to save the world from an impending doomsday event.

Season 2: Shadowverse Flame

Three years after the events of the first season, Light Tenryu receives an invitation and a pre-loaded deck from the founder of Shadowverse College, Wolfram Zerga. Despite having no knowledge of how to play Shadowverse, Light is told that the college holds the key to his destiny. He soon joins a club called “Seventh Flame,” which is on the verge of disbanding. Meanwhile, the newly reformed Genesis Corp is researching a new artifact called the Arc, which has mysteriously been stolen.

  • Hiro Ryugasaki (竜ヶ崎ヒイロ)
    • Voiced by: Gakuto Kajiwara
    • Hiro is a 2nd-year middle school student at Tensei Academy. He is extremely perseverant and has a genuine love for the game. He lives with his grandfather and believed his parents died in an accident when he was young. However, it is later revealed that his parents are trapped inside the Tree of Woe, an invention by his father’s company that backfired and threatened to destroy the world. He plays the Dragoncraft class. In the second season, he returns as a member of the Seven Shadows, the top Shadowverse players in the world, and uses the Portalcraft class.
  • Luca Yonazuki (夜那月ルシア)
    • Voiced by: Junya Enoki
    • Luca is a middle school student at a different school. A tragic accident killed his parents and severely injured his sister, Shiori, who now lives in a rehabilitation hospital. Luca plays Shadowverse to raise money for Shiori’s recovery. He is rarely happy due to Shiori’s condition, much to her chagrin as she just wants to see her brother smile. He plays the Bloodcraft class. In the second season, he returns as a member of the Seven Shadows.
  • Mimori Amamiya (天宮ミモリ)
    • Voiced by: Kaede Hondo
    • Mimori is Hiro’s classmate and one of his best friends. She worries about being too ordinary and is not a fan of ghosts and other scary things. She plays the Forestcraft class. In the second season, she continues her education and becomes a high schooler.
  • Kazuki Shindo (進藤カズキ)
    • Voiced by: Hayato Taya
    • Kazuki is Hiro’s classmate and one of his best friends. He excels at sports but has room for improvement in Shadowverse. He is responsible, taking care of his six younger siblings. He plays the Swordcraft class. In the second season, he becomes close friends with Kai and runs his family’s restaurant.
  • Kai Ijuin (伊集院カイ)
    • Voiced by: Atsumi Tanezaki
    • Kai is a 1st-year middle school student at Tensei Academy. He joins Hiro’s group of friends after hearing about Hiro’s victory over the school bully Takuma and challenging him to a Shadowverse duel. He is extremely analytical and considers himself a “genius among geniuses.” He plays the Runecraft class. In the second season, he becomes close friends with Kazuki.
  • Alice Kurobane (黒羽アリス)
    • Voiced by: Yui Ogura
    • Alice is a child idol with millions of fans. She enjoys Shadowverse but feels conflicted as her managers force her to play “cute” cards, limiting her enjoyment. She joins Hiro’s group of friends after meeting Mimori at a mall and challenging her to a game of Shadowverse. She plays the Shadowcraft class.
  • Mauro Abelard (マウラ・アベラルド)
    • Voiced by: Yūichi Iguchi
    • Mauro is a teenager who first encounters Hiro at the semi-finals of the National Shadowverse Tournament. Strangely, he already seems to know Hiro and his father. Mauro enjoys the thrill of slowly cornering his opponents. His backstory reveals a lonely and homeless childhood until Leon adopted him with the sole purpose of honing Mauro’s Shadowverse skills to eventually sacrifice his life to save the world from the Tree of Woe. He plays the Havencraft class. In the second season, Mauro works for the Genesis Corporation to help keep their ARC project and the events of the first season a secret.
  • Leon Aurenche (レオン・オーランシュ)
    • Voiced by: Toshiyuki Morikawa
    • Leon is the CEO of Genesis Corp and the creator of Shadowverse. His company initially aimed to create the Tree of Blessings to bring good fortune to the world, but it backfired, becoming the Tree of Woe, which threatens to destroy the world. Leon then developed the Shadowverse game to shut down the Tree of Woe and save the world. He formerly played the Havencraft class but now uses the Portalcraft class.
  • Marguerite Valois (マルグリット・ヴァロワ)
    • Voiced by: Satomi Akesaka
    • Marguerite is Leon’s secretary and often accuses him of being impulsive. After the events of the first season, she becomes the new CEO of Genesis Corp in the second season.

Season 2

Light Tenryu

  • Light is a new student at Shadowverse College who has never played Shadowverse before. He struggles with machines and lying but excels at keeping promises. His Digifriend is the mysterious Draconir, and he plays using the Dragoncraft class.

Draconir

  • Draconir is Light’s Digifriend with the unusual ability to talk. He has lost his memories of a life before his time with Light, which may be connected to the mysterious Arc artifact. Light believes that the Seven Shadows hold pieces of Draconir’s missing memory.

Itsuki Mitsutagawa

  • Itsuki is the president of the Seventh Flame club. He prefers cute and flowery things, which alienated him from other kids growing up. His Digifriend is Slade, and he plays using the Forestcraft class.

Subaru Makabe

  • Subaru is Light’s first friend at Shadowverse College. He prefers a laid-back approach and initially resents Shadowverse due to family pressure to become a pro. However, he becomes more serious and confident after joining Seventh Flame. His Digifriend is Baccherus, and he plays using the Shadowcraft class.

Shion Otosaka

  • Shion is a solitary and reclusive person, incredibly smart but struggles to connect with others. She interacts with others through her digital avatar, Lady & Gentleman. Originally the secret president of the Sixth Magic club, she joins Seventh Flame after losing to Light. Her Digifriend is Milady, and she plays using the Runecraft class.

Ren Kazamatsuri

  • Ren is very athletic and loves heroes, which alienates her from others for not being girly enough. She was originally from the Fifth Sword club but joined Seventh Flame to be true to herself. Her Digifriend is Amyroth, and she plays using the Swordcraft class.

Tsubasa Takanashi

  • Tsubasa is the former president of the Third Feather club. She lost interest in Shadowverse after her best friend quit due to harassment from Haruma Hazeura. She becomes more confident and assertive after joining Seventh Flame. Her Digifriend is Wingy, and she plays using the Havencraft class.

Ryoga Jasei

  • Ryoga is a former student and president of Shadoba College’s Second Blood. He loves metal music and crushing opponents in Shadowverse, considering everything else as unnecessary noise. His Digifriend is Demonium, but he rejects him and plays using the Bloodcraft class.
